5 Soul-Searching Questions to Ask Yourself at Mid-Career

Judy Sims

Veronica is a year into a new job. It’s a big one, she’s the CEO of a mid-sized organization. She knows she's supposed to be feeling some level of happiness and achievement, but instead, she’s haunted by a nagging series of questions. Is this what I really want? And for that matter, how did I get here? And what would I do if it wasn’t this?

I hear these questions regularly from my clients. We begin our careers in a great rush of hope and ambition. We burst out of the starting blocks and run. And run. And run. We’re chasing the dream! And when we get it, all the hard work will be worth it because we’ll be happy. And satisfied. And calm and confident.

But all too often (usually around the age of 38), we get to where we thought we wanted to go and are left asking the same questions as Veronica.

Reaching the midpoint of your career can feel like standing at a crossroads. You've likely achieved some milestones, but you might also be experiencing a sense of restlessness or questioning your path. This is a completely normal and even healthy phase. It's a great time to reflect, reassess, and reignite your passion for your work. To make the most of this pivotal moment, ask yourself these five crucial questions:

1. Am I Still Learning and Growing?

At mid-career, it's easy to fall into a routine, relying on established skills and knowledge. However, the professional landscape is constantly evolving. New technologies emerge, industries shift, and the skills in demand change. If you're feeling stagnant, it's a red flag.

  • Consider this: When was the last time you actively sought out a new skill or took on a challenging project? Are you staying up-to-date with industry trends? Are you surrounded by people who inspire and challenge you?

If the answer is no, it's time to take action. Explore online courses, attend workshops, network with forward-thinkers, or consider a mentor. Embrace lifelong learning to stay relevant and engaged. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new – it could be the spark you need.

2. Is My Work Still Meaningful to Me?

At this stage in your career, you've likely moved beyond simply earning a paycheck. You're looking for something more – a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Are you still passionate about the work you do? Does it align with your values? Do you feel like you're making a difference?

  • Consider this: What truly motivates you? What are you good at? What kind of impact do you want to have on the world?

If your current role no longer resonates with your values or provides a sense of purpose, it might be time to explore other options. This could involve a shift within your current company, a move to a different organization, or even a career change altogether.

3. Am I Satisfied with My Work-Life Balance?

Mid-career is the time in our lives when we have the most responsibilities – perhaps you're managing a team, raising a family, or caring for aging parents. Under such pressure, it's surprisingly easy to fall into burnout, affecting our health and wellbeing, and also our desire to progress in our careers.

  • Consider this: Are you consistently working long hours? Do you have enough time for the things you enjoy outside of work? Are you feeling stressed or burned out?

If your work-life balance is out of whack, it's important to set boundaries and prioritize your well-being. This might involve delegating tasks, saying no to extra commitments, or having open conversations with your manager about your workload.

4. Am I Being Adequately Compensated and Recognized?

You deserve to be fairly compensated for your contributions and recognized for your achievements. Falling behind on the pay scale can have implications that extend all the way into your retirement.

  • Consider this: Are you being paid what you're worth? Have you received a raise or promotion recently? Do you feel appreciated for your work?

Research industry benchmarks to ensure your salary is competitive. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself and ask for a raise or promotion if you deserve it. Keep track of your accomplishments and be prepared to showcase your value to your employer.

5. Where Do I See Myself in the Next 5-10 Years?

This is the big picture question. Take some time to envision your ideal future. What do you want to achieve professionally and personally?

  • Consider this: What are your career goals? What kind of lifestyle do you want to have? What steps can you take to get there?

Having a clear vision for your future will help you make informed decisions about your career path. It will also motivate you to take the necessary steps to achieve your goals.

Mid-career is not a crisis – it's time for reflection, prioritization, and strategizing. By asking yourself these five key questions, you can gain clarity, rediscover your passion, and chart a course for a fulfilling and successful future.

Yay you!
